The wines of Slovakia are not particularly well known in the UK. Alan and Stephanie recently attended a tasting at the Slovakian embassy, and were surprised to discover the range and quality of wines that this country now produces. It shares the Tokaji designation with Hungary, but also boasts a variety of different regions each with its own terroir.
Lucia Dovalova and Darren Kirkham, the owners of the Naughty Grape, a major importer specialising in wines from Slovakia have very kindly agreed to put together a tasting for us.
The wines to be tasted have been chosen from the best producers in the area and showcase just a small selection of the different grapes and styles that this region can offer- both local and international. Most are from the Small Carpathians region, apart from the third and the last which are from Tokaji. Three grapes allowed in the latter region – Furmint, Lipovina and Yellow Muscat. We will show the versatility of these grapes in the hands of skilled winemakers.
Matysak, Sekt Brut Sparkling 2019. 100% Chardonnay, traditional method.
Rariga, Riesling, 2018. Dry archival wine with beautifully developing tertiary notes from a specialist Riesling winemaker
