Young and vigorous, old and elegant wines

Join us for an interesting tasting of red, white and dessert wines, young and old.  They vary from widely available, to no longer available in those vintages. The two bottles of English wines may be the last ones of their kind, including one of the earliest oaked dry white wines produced in this country (made by Stephen Skelton, MW). They include some which showed extremely well at a recent Wine Society tasting. The 1976 German and the 1983 Loire are from really great years. Hamilton Russell and Domaine des Baumard are among the best in their wine regions.

Baia de Troia, Castelão (grape), 2023, Casa Ermelinda Freitas, Peninsula de Setubal, Portugal, 14%.

The Society’s 150^th Anniversary Chianti Classico 2015, Fontodi di Giovanni e Marco Manetti, 100% Sangiovese,14%.

The Society’s 150^th Anniversary Barossa Valley Shiraz, 2018, made by Yalumba, 14%.

Johannisberger Hölle, Riesling Auslese, 1976, Deinhard, Rheingau, 8 to 10%.

Domaine des Baumard, Quarts de Chaume, Chenin Blanc, 1983, Rochefort sur Loire. No stated alcohol.

Temple Sheen, Port-style fortified after-dinner wine, red, 2013. London. About 20%.

This tasting will be organised and presented by Dr Bernard Lamb, National Guild of Wine and Beer Judges.  It will be accompanied by a cold buffet provided by the Club.
