Join us for a tasting of top Shiraz wines from Australia, including some of the very best, led by Dr Bernard Lamb.
Many Australian winemakers are now making their Shiraz wines fruitier, softer and ready to drink earlier than has been traditional. We will start with a full-flavoured Viognier, the grape of Condrieu, often blended with Syrah in the Northern Rhone. Then we have a flight of nine Shiraz wines going back to 2005 from different parts of Australia from a range of makers, mainly very well-known. Penfolds makes Grange Shiraz, and Henschke makes Australia’s top wine, Hill of Grace Shiraz. Here is an opportunity to compare wines from the budget priced to the very expensive.
Elephant in the Room Voluminous Viognier, Fourth Wave Wines, New South Wales, 2024, 14.5%.
Pepper Box Shiraz, Casella Family, South Eastern Australia, 2022, 14%.
Little Giant Barossa Shiraz, 2022, 14.5%.
Yalumba Galway Vintage Shiraz, Barossa, 2022, 14.5%.
d’Arenberg The Footbolt Shiraz, 2021, McLaren Vale, 14.4%.
Penfolds Koonunga Hill Shiraz, Multi-regional blend, 2023, 14.5%.
Vasse Felix Margaret River Classic Shiraz, Western Australia, 2023, 14%.
Penfolds Bin 28 Shiraz, 2022, South Australia, 14.5%.
Henschke The Wheelwright Single Vineyard Shiraz, 2017, Eden Valley, 14.5%.
d’Arenberg The Laughing Magpie Shiraz Viognier, McLaren Vale, 2005, 15%.
The tasting will be accompanied by a cold buffet supplied by the Club.
At a recent tasting even the less expensive wines proved quite outstanding, so do join us for a fantastic educational evening.
Organised and presented by Dr Bernard Lamb, National Guild of Wine and Beer Judges.
