Rioja is known primarily for its red wines, although it also makes whites from the Viura and Malvasia grapes. Most bodegas have their own distinct red-wine formula, albeit typically a Tempranillo and Garnacha blend. Rioja has witnessed a broad stylistic evolution over the years, from the long, oak-barrel-ageing of the 19th century to the current vogue for wines made from specific vineyard plots using minority varietals such as Graciano. Looking back at my notes, we did a Rioja tasting back in 2006, therefore it’s about time to do a refresh.
Wines being tasted are:
Marqués de Riscal, Verdejo, Rueda Blanco, 2014
Cune Monopole Blanco, Viura 2014
Cune Monopole, Tempranillo Rioja, 2011
Cune Rioja Reserva, 2010
Rioja Reserva Vina Ardanza, 2007
Rioja Gran Reserva, Laguilla, 2007
Rioja Reserva, Marques de Cacares, 2010
Cune Vina Real Reserva, 2006
Cune Rioja Gran Imperial Reserva, 2004
Canapes and a light supper will be provided to go along with this tasting.
