This repeats the 2016 challenge with different wines. The idea is to compare, without prejudice, the attractiveness of English Sparkling Wines (chosen by Bernard Lamb) with that of Champagnes (chosen by Jeffrey Benson), and to see if people can tell the different types apart. The wines will be served blind in pairs, each pair consisting of one English wine and one Champagne of a similar style, with members voting after each pair for which they preferred and – if they wish – guessing which wine was which. The wines shown below are not necessarily in tasting order. The wines are closely matched for price.
Ashling Park Estate, Cuvée Brut, South Downs (NV) vs Lelarge Pugeot Extra Brut 1er Cru Tradition.
Alder Ridge Classic Cuvée Brut, 2013 vs West Berkshire vs Bernard Remy Blanc de Blancs.
Ridgeview Bloomsbury NV vs 2011 Hampshire vs Collet 1er Cru Art Deco.
High Clandon The Halcyon Cuvée Brut vs Hebrart 1er Cru Cuvee Special Club.
Plumpton Estate Brut Rosé NV, Sussex vs Bernard Remy Rosé.
There will be bread and a plate of cold meat and cheese provided by the Club.
This event will be a great opportunity to learn more about sparkling wines. Anyone who would like to stay on after the event for more food or drink is welcome to join Beverley, who is a member of the RAG.
