It’s a welcome return this year to the Middle Temple for our special Christmas Dinner. The last time we held our Christmas event there was December 2006 so it was felt sufficient time had elapsed to tempt you back again.
Middle Temple is one of the four Inns of Court, the others being Lincoln’s Inn, Inner Temple and Gray’s Inn. In the 13th century, the Inns of Court originated as hostels and schools for student lawyers. However in the 14th century The Inns of Court were established and their name derives from the Knight’s Templar who were in possession of the site for some 150 years until they were dissolved in 1312. The origins of the Inn trace from the occupation of the Knights and the replacement of priestly lawyers by a lay profession.
Middle Temple Hall was built between 1562 and 1573 and is perhaps the finest example of an Elizabethan hall in England. It remains virtually unchanged to this day having survived the Great Fire of London and both World Wars. The first recorded performance of Twelfth Night took place in Middle Temple Hall on 2nd February 1602.
Only barristers, senior members of the Bar and Judiciary, Law students and legal academics may become Middle Temple members so we are indebted to Michael Daiches for arranging this special event for us.
We will begin the evening with a reception in the Parliament Chamber at 7pm which will then be followed by dinner at 7.45pm.
