A tasting of Canadian Wines donated by member Morrie Niess with food.

Date(s) - Wed 21st Oct, 2015
7:00 pm

The Hilton Doubletree, Victoria

Morrie Neiss, a retired pharmacist, sold his chain of pharmacies in Eastern Canada  awhile back, and in retirement pursued his passion for wine by starting a boutique winery in Niagara.   He recently sold it after 11 years and kept enough inventory to amaze oenophiles for a long time to come! Morrie has most generously donated the wines for this tasting.

Morrie will present 7 Canadian wines from the Niagara region of Canada.  Three are from Morrie’s former vineyard, Alvento, and the other four  top wines are also from that area.   A short rundown of Canadian wine history and  production will be given to begin with.

The wines chosen are….
Alvento “Emilie”         Cabernet Franc  2006
Alvento “ Elige”          Caberbet Sauvignon  2006
Alvento “ Sondra”       Merlot  2006
Vineland Estates         “Meritage”  1998
Vineland Estates          Cab/Merlot  1998
Thirty Bench               “Small lot Cab”  2007
Foreign Affairs           “Abracio”    2007

Modestly Morrie won’t speak for the Alvento wines, but we must mention that the others are all award winners and the vintages are the best of their decade.   The high quality will raise eyebrows and as usually happens, murmurings of “I thought Canada only made Ice wine” will abound and will be firmly dispelled.

The tasting will be accompanied by: cold meat, cheese, salad and French bread.
